What to see
Discover Lisbon: explore at your own pace
Route 1: The historic heart of Lisbon
Perfect for a quick afternoon break or a morning stroll, this route takes you through the absolute essentials of Lisbon’s historic centre. Start at the bustling Rossio square, catch a classic view from the iron structure of the Santa Justa Lift, and walk down the pedestrianized streets towards the magnificent Rua Augusta Arch. Stepping through the arch brings you into Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon’s grandest riverside square. From there, challenge yourself to a rewarding uphill walk through the winding alleys of Alfama until you reach São Jorge Castle, where the best panoramic sunset views of the city await you.
Route 2: The age of discovery & pastries
Follow the Tagus River to the historic district of Belém, where Portugal’s maritime history comes to life. Walk along the waterfront to admire the iconic Belém Tower and the imposing Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos). Just across the gardens, you will find the breathtaking Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Gothic-Manueline architecture. Of course, no trip to Belém is complete without a sweet reward: wrap up your walk at the world-famous Pastéis de Belém bakery to try the original, warm custard tarts sprinkled with cinnamon.
Route 3: A mythical cultural escape
If you are planning to spend a little extra time with us and want to immerse yourself in a truly unique cultural experience, take a short train ride to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Sintra. Start with a stroll through the romantic historical centre and stop by the historic Piriquita bakery to try a traditional travesseiro pastry. Next, get lost in the mystical tunnels and initiation wells of Quinta da Regaleira. For the final stretch, head up the lush mountain to explore the ancient, rugged walls of the Moorish Castle and the vibrant, fairytale architecture of the colourful Pena Palace. It is an unforgettable day trip for those eager to explore beyond the city limits!
